If you have booked a fall family session or senior session with me, you already know I ask one big question on your questionnaire: are you drawn to nature, do you love an urban feel, or do you want a little bit of both? To help you decide, I’ve put together this location guide to make it a little easier to pick a spot.
As an Indianapolis family photographer with over 16 years of photographing families, extended families, seniors, and branding sessions throughout Carmel, Westfield, Brownsburg, Greenwood, and the surrounding areas, I return to these locations season after season. Below are some of my favorite locations, grouped by vibe first, since that is how I like to start the conversation with you. I’ve also noted the side of town for each one so you can pick somewhere close to home.
If your family loves exploring areas with trees, trails, and open fields, these are the parks I visit most with my nature-loving clients for family portraits and senior pictures.
Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve, Fishers. Wooded trails and a quiet, tucked-away feel that photographs beautifully in summer and fall. A great pick for a Fishers family session.

Cool Creek Nature Park, Carmel. I love the overgrown grassy areas with small patches of wildflowers here and there, and the trees in the fall always show off their beautiful foliage. A favorite for Carmel or Westfield family photos.

Flat Fork Creek Park, Fishers. Open meadows, a creek, and a beautiful bridge with nice clean lines. It has great golden-hour light in the evening and is one of my top picks for family portraits near Fishers and McCordsville.

Geist Park. A relaxed, less crowded option on the northeast side, plus I love the bridge as a rustic add-on. It’s the perfect place if you want your family photos to feel unhurried.

Southeastway Park. I have been visiting this park since I ran cross country in high school, so I know it very well! It has wooded areas, trails, a creek that is great for creek stomping or just for some water in the background of your pictures, and open fields, meadows and prairies. We could visit this park year after year and your photos would look different every time. This park works well for families who want space to spread out, and seniors who want a more laid-back vibe.

Glenns Valley Nature Park. This park is smaller, with a peaceful, secluded feel. It has a lot of gorgeous trees, native plants and overgrown areas, and an old historic house for some variety. It’s a nice option for extended family photos on the south side of Indy.

Garfield Park. One of the oldest parks in the city, with beautiful mature trees and formal garden areas on the south side of downtown Indianapolis. There’s a small fee to visit the sunken garden, but there’s a wide variety of areas to explore.

Eagle Creek Park. The variety here is hard to beat: fields, wooded trails, and water access all in one park. It is a great choice for true nature lovers! I’ve photographed families with flowers, water, and fall foliage here, and you can always find a new area to visit, or go back to the crowd-pleasing pond that everyone loves.

If your family feels more comfortable in an urban setting, downtown Indianapolis offers more variety than you might expect for family photos and senior pictures alike.
Fountain Square. Colorful storefronts, amazing graffiti artwork, and a fun, artsy energy. Fountain Square is a favorite for seniors who want personality and lots of color in their pictures.

Bottleworks District. Modern architecture with a polished, upscale feel. The Bottleworks District is great for branding sessions, senior sessions, and family sessions, and a great place if you feel like dressing up!

War Memorial Plaza and Obelisk Square, downtown. This whole area downtown is one of my favorite urban locations in the city for family photos, senior photos, and branding sessions. You get the chance to climb the stairs of the War Memorial building, which takes you up high for a gorgeous view of the city skyline and amazing lighting. You get some greenery and a large water fountain across the street, then we can hop over to the Social Security building on Pennsylvania and Michigan, where an ombre color wall adds fun, unexpected pops of color. Golden hour here is stunning!

Monument Circle and downtown Indianapolis. A classic Indianapolis view, always a hit for family members who want that unmistakable city backdrop, and a great stop for portrait sessions.
Broad Ripple. Eclectic shops, a lot of color and some graffiti, with a laid-back, rustic vibe.

Highland Park. A great park setting with the city skyline behind you, plus cute nearby houses that provide a fun backdrop.

This is where most of my Indianapolis-area clients end up, somewhere that gives you nature without feeling completely tucked away, plus a little architecture or small-town charm mixed in.
Holliday Park. This one truly bridges both worlds. The park setting is gorgeous on its own, and the historic ruins on the property add an architectural element you will not find anywhere else in the city. Their landscaping is stunning, too. It’s centrally located in Indy, which makes it a great pick for extended family sessions when everyone’s coming from different sides of town.

Coxhall Gardens, Carmel. Manicured gardens paired with a natural setting, plus an amphitheater that adds a beautiful architectural backdrop.

Old City Park, Greenwood. A charming park on the south side with a small-town feel. The grounds have a soft, overgrown quality without looking unkempt, and the light here is gorgeous.

Fort Harrison State Park, Lawrence. One of my go-to spots for family photos year-round. We can stick to the area in front of the park near the hotel and incorporate the bridge, or head into the park for the fields, trails, and a dock overlooking the water.

Newfields. The grounds and landscaping here are the best kept in the city, hands down. This is the perfect place for senior portraits in Indianapolis, and great for families too! Keep in mind that come September, Newfields shifts to Harvest Nights hours, which affects when we can shoot there, so this one is best saved for spring or summer rather than late fall.

100 Acre Woods. A great option year-round if you want that mixed nature feel no matter the season. The pond creates lovely water scenery.

These downtown areas all have that perfect small-town feel: fun doorways and alleyways, flowers, local businesses, and a park nearby if you want to add a nature backdrop to the same session.
Downtown Bargersville, a favorite for Center Grove and Greenwood area families.

Franklin, Indiana, a great option for anyone on the south side without the big city feel.

Danville, Indiana. The town square and surrounding alleyways always surprise my clients. So much variety in texture and color. It’s the perfect place for family photos, senior portraits or branding sessions on the west side of Indianapolis.

Noblesville, Indiana. I can’t get enough of the murals and cute doorways, and the bridge over the water is stunning

Fortville, Indiana, quaint and quiet. It is the perfect spot for someone who lives east of Indianapolis and wants a small-town vibe for their portrait session.

Zionsville, Indiana, a go-to for family photos and senior portraits near Westfield and Carmel.

Lockerbie Square, downtown Indianapolis. Cobblestone streets and historic charm right in the heart of the city.
