I have been photographing newborns since I started my business in 2010, and what an absolute gift it has been. After taking a newborn workshop in 2012, I was lucky enough to start photographing so many babies, my friends’ newborns, their friends’ newborns, my own family members and their growing families, and so many sweet little ones in between. Almost sixteen years and countless tiny toes later, newborn photography is still one of my very favorite things in the world.
One of the questions I get asked the most is whether to book a lifestyle in-home newborn session or an in-studio posed newborn session. The honest answer is that both are beautiful, both tell a story, and the right one really depends on your family. So I thought it might help to walk through the differences side by side, with collages from real families I have had the joy of photographing here in central Indiana.
Lifestyle newborn sessions happen right in the comfort of your own home. I love these sessions because they capture your family exactly where life is actually happening, on the couch where you nurse at 2 a.m., in the nursery you spent months getting just right, in the big bed where everyone piles in for snuggles, and yes, with the family dog in as many frames as possible. These in-home newborn sessions are relaxed, less posed, and full of soft natural light and real connection.
What I love most is that lifestyle sessions tell the true story of your family’s first days at home together. Big siblings get to be themselves, parents get to just be parents and the pets get included. The little details of your everyday life become part of the imagery, and those are the moments you will treasure most when you look back. Each collage below is one family, and you will see right away how different and personal every single session feels.

In studio posed newborn sessions are a different kind of magic. These take place in my newborn studio, where I have control over the light, the temperature, all of the wraps and bonnets and headbands, and a sweet collection of backdrops, baskets, and props. Studio newborn sessions are typically scheduled within the first two weeks after baby is born, when they are still tiny and snuggly and willing to sleep through almost anything, with a little bit more preparation beforehand.
Posed newborn sessions are timeless and editorial in feel. The focus is mostly on baby, with a few family, parent and sibling images woven in. If you love that classic, magazine-worthy newborn look with sleepy poses, soft neutral palettes, and all of those tiny details (the eyelashes, the wrinkly feet, the perfect little lips), or you just don’t want to have the session in your home, an in-studio session is probably for you.

This very last collage is extra special to me. It is the sixth baby I have photographed for the same family. Watching their family grow over the years through my camera has been one of the greatest honors of my career. I am so grateful that they keep inviting me back, and so thankful to be able to keep doing this work.

If you want photos that feel like a love letter to this exact season of your life, your home, your people, your everyday rhythm, a lifestyle in-home newborn session is probably the perfect fit. If you are dreaming of beautifully posed, timeless portraits that focus on your sweet new baby, an in-studio posed session will be your favorite. The good news, you can get a relaxed lifestyle session vibe in the studio, and I can also do a few more posed setups if I am in your home (although posed images are a bit easier to do in studio). I honestly I love both styles.
Whichever style you choose, please know how grateful I am that you would even consider trusting me with these brand new days. Photographing newborns has brought me so much joy for over a decade, and every single baby I get to meet still feels like a gift. If you are expecting a baby in the Indianapolis area and want to chat about booking a newborn photography session, I would love to hear from you!
